Chapter Twenty

Having tied the dogs outside the police station, Maggie walked in. Neither the sergeant nor Raj was around. She was told they were in a meeting. She stood in front of the police station and sighed, hoping Tina was wrong. Spotting Arthur’s boat at the marina that was open again for business, Maggie hurried over.

She poked her head through the door. Gi was speaking to two customers. She checked with him that her dogs were welcome inside and let them in. Beans and Carrot proceeded to investigate the place thoroughly. The cooled air was a relief from the stifling heat. A new fountain caught her attention, positioned right in the middle of the room. Five fish surrounded a mermaid that spat water down into a seashell. Maggie cupped her hands above the shell and splashed water over her hot face.

The fountain wasn’t for sale, as far as she could tell. It was a perfect fit for the growing collection of statues that Gi seemed to like. Would Gi’s yard be filled with fairies or dolphins or perhaps garden gnomes? Maggie smiled at the thought.

Gi approached her, followed by two men. “You like it?” He beamed, a sharp contrast to her recent encounters with him.

“Yes, could be a nice bird bath too, if you put it outside,” Maggie replied.

“Yes, yes, I’ve got another one for that. With birds, cranes.” He pointed outside to three cranes, their heads pointed to the sky, their beaks spewing water into a shallow dish sitting on their backs. “If you like it, I can get one for you.”

“Very nice for your place, but I prefer minimalistic designs.” Seeing Gi’s hesitation, she added, “A simple design, like a plain saucer.”

In stepped one of the men. “I totally know what you’re looking for and where to get it.”

Maggie turned to the shorter of the two men, in a tight-fitting polo shirt. She had seen them at the local fruit and vegetable vendor and had wondered who they were. They had been asking all kinds of questions on how best to grow tomatoes and beans.

For some reason, she thought they were vacationers rather than locals, perhaps because of their big-city elegance. She hadn’t expected someone like him to know all about birdbaths. She had assumed too quickly and was therefore mistaken. She smiled, waiting for him to elaborate.

“There’s a good online store for it. We got one for our garden. The name will come back to me.”

He put a hand on the taller man’s arm. With a broad smile, he stretched out his other hand toward Maggie.

“Ronnie, my partner.” With his hand on his chest, he added, “I’m Clive.”

“Maggie.”

“We’ve seen your photos at the Horizon Cafe. Awesome, isn’t that right, Ronnie?” Ronnie nodded. “We moved up here for the fresh air and relaxed lifestyle. We just bought the sports store in town.”

“I hope you like it here and everyone is treating you well.” Maggie recollected seeing Clive for the first time through the window of the store.

Ronnie’s deep voice filled the air.
